LED PCBs —
engineered around the heat.

From a single emitter to a 200-LED board, an LED PCB has one defining job: move heat away from the diodes. PCBSync designs, builds and assembles LED boards on aluminum, copper, ceramic and flexible substrates — prototype to volume.

What it is

What is an LED PCB?

An LED PCB is a printed circuit board built to mount and power light-emitting diodes. It carries the electrical connections and physical support for the LEDs — and, above all, conducts their heat away. Because LEDs convert most of their input power into heat, the board is really a thermal device: junction temperature decides brightness, colour stability and lifespan.

That is why most LED boards are metal-core: a thin, thermally conductive dielectric carries heat from the LED into a metal base that acts as a built-in heatsink. The right base — aluminum, copper, ceramic or flexible — depends on how much heat the LEDs make.

Why it matters

Thermal design decides everything

Heat travels from the LED junction → solder pad → dielectric → metal base → heatsink → air, and every step adds resistance. Lower the total and the LED runs cooler, brighter and longer — roughly every 10 °C off junction temperature can double its life. It is the thinking behind every high-power LED PCB we build.

  • Pick the right base — aluminum, copper or ceramic for the heat load.
  • Heavy copper — up to 6 oz to spread current and heat.
  • Thermal vias — vertical heat paths on FR-4 and hybrids.
  • White solder mask — reflects light to lift usable output.
  • ENIG / OSP finish — flat, solderable, no yellowing under reflow.

Design tips

LED PCB design tips that pay off

Match base to power

FR-4 for indicators, aluminum for lighting, copper/ceramic for high density.

Size the copper

2–3 oz (or more) and wide traces for high-current LEDs to avoid voltage drop.

Use a white mask

White reflects light for better uniformity; specify mask that resists yellowing in reflow.

Add thermal vias

On FR-4 and hybrids, via arrays carry heat to the back; MCPCBs use the metal core itself.

Plan strips & power

V-cut long boards and inject power along the length to keep brightness even.

Design for DFM

Send Gerber + XY + BOM with polarity marks; conformal-coat outdoor boards.

LED PCB — FAQ

An LED PCB is a printed circuit board designed to mount and power light-emitting diodes. It provides the electrical connections and mechanical support for the LEDs and — most importantly — conducts heat away from them. Because LEDs turn most of their input power into heat, the board's thermal design largely decides brightness and lifespan.

It depends on power. FR-4 suits low-power indicators; an aluminum MCPCB is the default for most lighting; copper core handles extreme power density; and ceramic gives the lowest thermal resistance for the most demanding LEDs. Material choice is driven mainly by how much heat the LEDs produce.

A standard FR-4 board traps heat, which raises the LED junction temperature and shortens life. A metal-core PCB (usually aluminum) acts as a built-in heatsink: heat passes through a thin thermally conductive dielectric into the metal base and out to the housing, keeping the LED cool.

SMD boards mount many separate surface-mount LED packages, spreading heat and giving flexible, cost-effective designs. COB (chip-on-board) places many bare dies under one phosphor for a single high-flux source, which concentrates heat and needs a stronger thermal path. We build both.

Lower every thermal resistance from junction to air: a high-conductivity dielectric on a metal or ceramic base, heavy copper to spread current, thermal vias where needed, and good contact to a heatsink. A white solder mask also reflects light to lift usable output.

Yes — DFM and design support, quick-turn prototypes, and full turnkey assembly with LED sourcing and testing, all scaling from a first prototype to volume production under one roof.

Send your Gerber files (RS-274X), the drill/coordinate (XY) file and a BOM, with clear LED polarity marks. We review for manufacturability and reply with feasibility and a quote, usually within 24 hours. NDA on request.

Let's build your LED PCB.

Whatever the LED, whatever the power — partner with a manufacturer that engineers the board around the heat, from prototype to volume.
