What it is

COB PCBs for high-density light engines

Chip-on-board (COB) packs many bare LED dies directly onto the board under a single phosphor layer, creating one bright, uniform source with no visible individual diodes. That density concentrates heat, so the substrate and pad design carry the whole thermal load.

COB boards run on high thermal-conductivity aluminum MCPCB for general lighting and on a ceramic LED PCB for the highest-output engines. Precise pad geometry, a white reflective surface and a short thermal path keep a COB cool, efficient and long-lived — the thinking behind every high-power board we build.

COB vs SMD

Why COB needs a better board

SMD designs spread heat across many separated packages, so each diode has room to cool. COB concentrates all of that heat into one small area, so the board must do far more thermal work. A high thermal-conductivity dielectric — or ceramic for the brightest engines — keeps a COB efficient and durable.

  • Concentrated heat — all in one small area.
  • High-TC dielectric — low junction-to-case path.
  • Ceramic option — AlN for brightest engines.
  • White mask — recovers usable light.
  • Precise pads — accurate thermal & bond geometry.

COB LED PCB — FAQ

A chip-on-board PCB has multiple bare LED dies mounted directly on the board under one phosphor layer, forming a single uniform light source. Because the heat is concentrated, the board's substrate and pad design carry the full thermal load.

Aluminum with a high thermal-conductivity dielectric handles most general-lighting COB engines. For the highest-output engines, a ceramic base such as AlN removes far more heat and protects efficiency and lifespan.

SMD spreads heat across many separated packages, while COB concentrates it into a small area — demanding a much shorter thermal path, so COB boards use high-TC dielectrics or ceramic substrates.
