What it is

PCBs for LED bulbs and lamps

An LED bulb PCB carries the LEDs (and sometimes the driver) inside a lamp. Because the board also has to move heat into the bulb housing, most are round or star-shaped aluminum MCPCBs; compact or higher-power lamps step up to a copper core.

Two design routes exist: driver-on-board (DOB), where an on-board linear IC runs the LEDs straight from AC for a smaller, cheaper lamp; or an external constant-current driver for tighter control. We build both, with surge protection for DOB. The round outline is shared with our round LED PCB and downlight work.

Design tips

Designing a reliable bulb board

Pick DOB vs driver

DOB shrinks cost and size; an external driver gives tighter current control and dimming — choose by product tier.

Protect DOB designs

Add a TVS/MOV plus fuse for surge and over-voltage so AC-direct lamps survive the grid.

Size the LED string

Series strings sized to driver voltage and LED Vf (≈2.8–3.4 V white); balance strings for even current.

Apply the 3W rule

Trace spacing ≈3× trace width and 2 oz copper on power traces to limit heating and voltage drop.

Spread the heat

Aluminum/copper base plus good board-to-housing contact protects lumen maintenance.

Plan mounting & wire

Centre wire hole, mounting features and optical keep-outs sized to the housing.

Why PCBSync

Lamp boards that last the lamp

A bulb is only as reliable as its board and driver. We give DFM feedback on string layout, DOB vs driver, surge protection and thermal contact, then build and test — AOI, electrical test and lab checks through our PCB laboratory — from prototype to high volume.

  • DOB or driver — AC-direct or constant-current.
  • Surge protection — TVS/MOV + fuse on DOB.
  • Round/star/custom — any lamp outline.
  • Heat to housing — MCPCB + good contact.
  • Proto to volume — scale with one partner.

LED bulb PCB — FAQ

Most LED bulbs use a round or star-shaped aluminum MCPCB so heat from the LEDs spreads into the bulb housing. Higher-power or compact lamps may use a copper core; very cheap lamps sometimes use FR-4 for low-power designs.

DOB runs the LED string directly from AC mains using an on-board linear driver IC, with no separate external driver. It makes the bulb smaller and cheaper; we add surge protection (TVS/MOV + fuse) for reliability. We also build versions for an external constant-current driver.

LEDs are usually wired in series strings sized to the driver voltage and LED forward voltage (≈2.8–3.4 V for white). A common rule is to space LEDs to isolate heat and apply the 3W rule — trace spacing about 3× trace width — with 2 oz copper on power traces.
