What it is

PCBs for recessed downlights

A downlight PCB is the round light-engine board inside a recessed ceiling fixture. It carries either a COB engine for a tight, controlled beam or an SMD array for a wider, even wash — on an aluminum or copper base that moves heat into the fixture heatsink.

Because the fixture is round, these share the geometry of our round LED PCB work — radial layout, centre wire hole, optical keep-outs and clean panelization. Good thermal contact between board and heatsink is what protects colour consistency and lumen maintenance.

Design tips

Designing a downlight module

Choose the engine

COB for tight beams and glare control; SMD for a wider, uniform field and simpler dimming.

Match the fixture

Pick Ø 30–120 mm to the 2–8 inch fixture; place the centre wire hole and mounting early.

Nail the thermal contact

Maximise board-to-heatsink contact area and use a thermal pad — the fixture is the real heatsink.

Plan the optics

Keep-outs for the reflector/lens and an even emitter pattern for a clean beam.

Route tunable channels

For CCT-selectable boards, route warm/cool channels with balanced current.

Pick driver vs DOB

External constant-current for control, or DOB to drop the external driver.

Why PCBSync

Downlight engines built to spec

Whether you need a COB spotlight or a wide SMD wash, we fabricate and (optionally) assemble the round module, give DFM feedback on thermal contact and optics, and verify quality through our PCB laboratory — prototype to volume across our capabilities.

  • COB or SMD — tight beam or even field.
  • Round module DFM — optics, mounting, panelization.
  • Thermal contact — board to fixture heatsink.
  • Tunable white — multi-channel CCT.
  • Proto to volume — one partner end to end.

LED downlight PCB — FAQ

Most recessed downlights use a round MCPCB — aluminum for cost-effective heat spreading, or copper for high output. The board carries either a COB light engine for a tight beam or an SMD array for a wider, even wash, then mounts to the fixture's heatsink.

COB gives a single compact, high-flux source for tight beams and better glare control; SMD spreads many emitters for a wider, more uniform field and easier dimming. We build both — see COB LED PCB and SMD LED PCB.

Commonly Ø 30–120 mm to match 2–8 inch fixtures, with a centre hole or pads for the driver wire, mounting holes, and optical keep-outs for the reflector or lens.

Yes — multi-channel boards for tunable white (e.g. 2700–6500 K) or CCT-selectable designs, with the extra traces and pads routed on the round outline.

Yes — DOB modules run from AC without an external driver, and we also build versions for a separate constant-current driver. See LED bulb PCB for DOB details.
