What it is

PCBs for outdoor street lighting

A street light PCB has to remove a lot of heat in a harsh environment. Most are aluminum MCPCBs (6063/6061 alloy) with a high thermal-conductivity dielectric and heavy copper; the highest-output or longest-life designs use a copper core. The board carries COB or high-power SMD arrays and bonds to a finned heatsink.

On top of thermal design, outdoor boards need surge protection, moisture resistance and a wide temperature rating. It is the same thermal discipline as our high-power LED PCB work, applied to the outdoor world — and built at the quality level across our capabilities.

Design tips

Designing an outdoor street-light board

Flood it with vias

Place filled thermal vias (≈0.3–0.5 mm) densely under the LED pads to drop junction-to-base resistance.

Use heavy copper

2–6 oz copper and 4–6 mm power traces for 3 A+ currents and even heat spreading.

Cluster centrally

Group high-power LEDs centrally with adequate spacing and bond to a finned heatsink (8–12 fins/inch).

Protect against surge

TVS + PTC/fuse to pass 6 kV (IEC 61000-4-5); conformal coat or pot for moisture.

Place the driver smartly

Keep the driver/IC away from LED hotspots and parallel to airflow; add an NTC for thermal dimming.

Plan for Zhaga/solar

Modular Zhaga engines for serviceability; DC constant-current boards for solar/MPPT systems.

Why PCBSync

Outdoor boards that survive

Street lighting fails from heat and weather. We engineer the thermal-via field, heavy copper and heatsink interface, add surge and moisture protection, and verify with thermal and electrical testing in our PCB laboratory — then scale for municipal-volume rollouts.

  • Thermal-via fields — low junction-to-base resistance.
  • Heavy copper — up to 6 oz spreading.
  • Surge & IP — TVS/PTC, conformal coat.
  • Zhaga / solar — modular and DC-driver ready.
  • Volume rollout — panelized, tested at scale.

LED street light PCB — FAQ

High-power LED street lights use an aluminum MCPCB (often 6063/6061 alloy) with a high thermal-conductivity dielectric and heavy copper. For the highest output or longest life, a copper core is used. The board carries COB or high-power SMD arrays and bonds to a finned heatsink.

Cluster the high-power LEDs centrally with adequate spacing, use heavy copper (2–6 oz) and a dense array of filled thermal vias under the pads, then bond the board to a finned heatsink with a thermal pad. Keep the driver away from the LED hotspots.

Outdoor boards need conformal coating or potting for moisture, an IP-rated fixture, and surge protection — typically a TVS plus PTC/fuse to pass 6 kV surge (IEC 61000-4-5) — rated for -40 to +85 °C operation.

Yes — modular Zhaga-style light engines, on-board sensors/NTC for dimming protection, and DC constant-current boards for solar (MPPT/battery) systems. The same thermal discipline applies; see high-power LED PCB.

From single modules to large bars and multi-module arrays, with heavy copper and thermal-via fields for 30–200 W+ outputs, panelized and tested for volume rollout.

Let's build your street light PCB.

High-power, surge-ready outdoor boards — engineered for heat, weather and municipal-scale life.
