What it is

PCBs for surface-mount LED packages

An SMD LED PCB mounts surface-mount LED packages — identified by size codes like 2835, 3030 or 5050 — onto a board. SMD is the most common, flexible and cost-effective way to build LED lighting, from strips and panels to downlights and high-bay heads.

The board choices that matter are footprint accuracy, thermal-pad design and substrate: FR-4 for low-power, an aluminum MCPCB once the LEDs run warm, or flexible for strips. Sticking to standard footprints keeps your project on high-speed SMT — the same line we use across our capabilities.

Design tips

Designing a manufacturable SMD board

Use standard footprints

Common packages load onto high-speed pick-and-place without special feeders — lower setup fees, faster lead times.

Optimise the thermal pad

Maximise copper-pour contact under the package's thermal pad and add vias so heat reaches the base.

Match substrate to power

FR-4 for indicators, aluminum once LEDs run warm, flexible polyimide for strips.

Design for AOI

Well-characterised footprints let AOI catch real defects — keep spacing and solder-mask openings to spec.

Plan the array

Even spacing and pour for uniform light and heat; balance strings for consistent current.

Protect for outdoor

Conformal coating, potting or IP-rated parts for strips and fixtures exposed to weather.

SMD vs COB

Choosing your LED package type

SMD spreads many separate packages across the board, so heat has room to dissipate and the design stays flexible and cost-effective. COB concentrates many bare dies into one phosphor area for maximum flux from a small source. Most products use SMD; COB wins where lumen density is critical. We build — and assemble — both, verified in our PCB laboratory.

  • Footprint accuracy — SMT-ready standard pads.
  • Thermal pad — copper pour + vias tuned.
  • Substrate choice — FR-4 / aluminum / flex.
  • High-speed SMT — lower cost, faster turns.
  • Turnkey — sourcing & assembly.

SMD LED PCB — FAQ

The code is the package size in millimetres — 2835 is 2.8 × 3.5 mm, 3030 is 3.0 × 3.0 mm, 5050 is 5.0 × 5.0 mm. Larger packages give more lumens or fit multiple dies (5050 holds R/G/B); smaller ones (0603, 0805) suit indicators.

It depends on power: FR-4 is fine for low-power indicators and decorative work, an aluminum MCPCB is preferred once the LEDs run warm (high-bay, downlights, strips at power), and flexible polyimide is used for bendable strips.

Common packages like 2835 and 5050 are the 'global language' of SMT — they load onto high-speed pick-and-place without special feeders, and their solder behaviour is well characterised, so AOI is more accurate and setup fees and lead times drop.

High-power SMD packages have a bottom thermal pad; we optimise the copper pour and (on metal-core boards) the dielectric contact under that pad for a low-resistance path, adding thermal vias where the package needs them.

SMD spreads many separated emitters for even, flexible, cost-effective light; COB concentrates many dies into one high-flux source. See COB LED PCB for the contrast, and LED PCB assembly for turnkey build.
