What drives PCB manufacturing cost

Bare-board price isn't one number — it's the sum of these levers. Knowing them helps you design for cost and read any fab quote with confidence.

Layer count

The strongest lever. Every added layer means another lamination cycle, more drilling and tighter registration, so price steps up clearly from 2 to 4 to 6 layers and beyond.

Board size & panel use

Larger boards use more laminate, and odd shapes leave gaps on the production panel. Good panel utilization — fitting more boards per panel — directly lowers your per-board cost.

Material & laminate

Standard FR4 is the baseline. High-Tg, aluminum (metal-core), Rogers and other RF laminates, and polyimide flex all carry higher material and processing costs.

Copper weight

Heavier copper — 2 oz, 3 oz and above for power and thermal designs — needs more material and careful etching to hold trace geometry, raising the board price.

Surface finish

HASL is the most economical. ENIG, immersion silver and hard gold add per-area cost but bring flatness, fine-pitch suitability and reliability that many designs need.

Trace, space & holes

Finer trace and space (5, 4, 3.5 mil) and smaller drills push tighter tolerances and lower yields. Standard 6 mil geometry is the most cost-effective place to design.

Via technology

Simple through-hole vias are cheapest. Blind, buried and HDI microvias need sequential lamination and laser drilling — a significant adder to both tooling and per-board cost.

Impedance & tolerance

Controlled impedance, via-in-pad, tight mechanical tolerances and extra electrical testing add engineering setup and per-board processing to guarantee performance.

Quantity & lead time

Tooling is fixed, so per-board cost falls as volume rises. Quick-turn fabrication compresses the schedule and carries a premium over standard lead times.

How quantity changes your per-board fab cost

Illustrative — fixed tooling spread across more boards, with better panel batching at volume. Your real numbers depend on the specs above.

PCB manufacturing cost — FAQ

Bare-board cost is a one-time tooling charge plus a per-board price set by layer count, board area, material, copper weight, surface finish, minimum trace and hole sizes, via technology and quantity. A small 2-layer FR4 board can be a few dollars each at volume; multilayer HDI or controlled-impedance boards cost considerably more. Use the estimator above for a budgetary figure, then send your Gerbers for an exact quote. This is the bare board only — assembly is quoted separately.

Layer count, board size and advanced features drive the most cost. Blind and buried vias, HDI microvias, heavy copper, fine trace and space, exotic laminates like Rogers or polyimide, premium finishes like ENIG or hard gold, and controlled impedance all push the price up versus a standard 2-layer FR4 board.

It's one of the strongest levers. Each jump — 2 to 4, 4 to 6 — adds lamination cycles, extra drilling and tighter registration, so the per-board price steps up at each level. Designing on the fewest layers that meet your routing and signal-integrity needs is one of the best ways to control cost.

HDI construction needs sequential lamination and laser drilling, with extra plating and inspection versus simple through-hole vias. That added complexity and lower yield raises both tooling and per-board cost.

Use the fewest layers that work, keep the board rectangular for good panel utilization, order in larger batches to spread tooling, stay with standard FR4 and HASL where reliability allows, avoid unnecessary fine geometry or blind/buried vias, and allow standard lead times. Our free DFM review flags cost drivers before production.

Send Gerber files in RS-274X format (preferred) plus a drill file and your stackup or layer requirements. We also accept Protel PCB/DDB or Eagle BRD. Compress everything into one .zip or .rar, and we return a firm quote promptly.
