PCB Assembly FAQs

What is the difference between PCB manufacturing and PCB assembly?

PCB manufacturing refers to the process of producing the bare printed circuit boards — creating copper traces, drilling holes, and applying solder masks.

PCB assembly (PCBA) is the next step, where components are soldered onto the board to create a fully functional electronic device. PCBsync offers both PCB manufacturing and PCB assembly services for one-stop solutions.

Send PCB files and Bom list to sales@PCBsync.com with quantity and requirement, We will assign a sales person for one-on-one service, She/he will quote you in 24hours and follow rest.

No, We donot, You can start from 1 pcs PCBA.

Yes, We do,  This called partial Turn-key. You can supply some parts, and we source the rest of the parts on your behalf. We will ask for your approval for anything that is not sure at our side. In case parts crossing or substitution is needed, we will again ask for your final approval.

Of course, yes. We provide complete box-build services from printed circuit board design, manufacturing, assembly to end product prototyping PCB!

Well, the cost depends on your requirements including design, complexity, number of layers, etc.

You typically need three essential files:

  1. Gerber files: Used for PCB fabrication, showing the board’s physical design
  2. BOM (Bill of Materials): A detailed list of all components including part numbers, quantities, values, and package types
  3. CPL/PNP file (Component Placement List/Pick and Place file): Shows exact coordinates and orientation for component placement

Additional helpful files include assembly drawings, schematic diagrams, and any special assembly instructions. Most manufacturers provide templates and examples on their websites.

Centroid is the special file for assembly used for quickly programming the assembly machines. This is also known as aka Insertion, Pick-N-Place, or XY Data. Some of the CAD tools will automatically generate this file and some not, but you may need to modify the file and then generate the Centroid file. The Centroid file describes the position and orientation of all the surface mount parts, which includes the reference designator, X and Y position, rotation and side of Board (Top or Bottom). Only surface mounting parts are listed in the Centroid.

Absolutely. Before production, our engineers conduct free DFM, DFA and Gerber file checks to identify potential issues.

This helps prevent costly rework and ensures a smooth production process.

Our value-added services include electro-mechanical assembly, cable and wire harness assembly, box builds, panel assembly, specialized PCB rework, BGA assembly, RoHS compliant PCBs, conformal coating, potting, encapsulation, testing, and more.

PCBsync takes confidentiality very seriously.

All customer files are stored securely and only accessed by authorized engineers.

We can also sign NDAs upon request to ensure your intellectual property remains protected.

SMT (Surface Mount Technology) places components directly on the PCB surface using solder paste and reflow soldering, while through-hole assembly inserts component leads through drilled holes in the board and solders them on the opposite side. SMT offers higher component density and faster assembly, while through-hole provides stronger mechanical bonds and is better for components that experience physical stress. Many modern boards use mixed technology, combining both methods.

PCB assembly costs vary widely based on several factors:

  • Board complexity and size
  • Component count and types (basic vs. extended parts)
  • Order volume (low-volume runs are more expensive per unit)
  • Turnaround time (expedited services cost more)
  • Testing requirements (AOI, ICT, functional testing)
  • Location of manufacturer

Low-volume prototype assembly (5-100 boards) can range from $50-$500+ per board, while high-volume production significantly reduces per-unit costs. Additional fees may include setup charges, stencil costs, and component procurement.

Turnaround times vary by manufacturer and order complexity:

  • Prototype/Low-volume: 24-48 hours (if components are in stock)
  • Standard orders: 3-7 business days
  • With component procurement: Add 3-14 days for sourcing
  • High-volume production: 2-4 weeks

The assembly process itself is relatively quick (24-48 hours for most orders), but component sourcing often accounts for the majority of lead time. Many manufacturers offer expedited services for urgent projects.

Turnkey PCB assembly is a complete, one-stop service where the manufacturer handles everything:

  • PCB fabrication
  • Component procurement and sourcing
  • PCB assembly
  • Testing and quality control
  • Sometimes even final product packaging

You simply provide the design files and specifications, and receive finished, tested boards. This contrasts with consignment assembly, where you supply your own components. Turnkey services save time and simplify the process but may cost slightly more per unit.
